Pachyselis auriformis

Schrammen, 1910

Pachyselis auriformis is rare at Misburg and Höver. It is a thick-walled (typically 8 mm), ear-shaped or plate-like sponge with round margins. As a member of the Seliscothonidae, it has a weak lamellar skeleton structure which is, however, less prominent than in Seliscothon sp.

The identification of this specimen (and another, very similar one) as Pachyselis auriformis is not without doubt. While it is clearly different from Chonella tenuis (see footnote) and matches Schrammen's (1924) definition of Pachyselis auriformis, there is a third type of sponge which could possibly also be identified as Pachyselis auriformis (see images below).

Doubtfull specimen, perhaps an excentric individual of Seliscothon sp. Two specimens of this kind are presently known. They are very thick-walled (10 to 12 mm) and the margin has a square profile with sharp edges.

*) In the recent edition of the Treatise, Reid (2004), following Schrammen (1924), has separated Chonella auriformis from Chonella tenuis. Chonella auriformis (= Achilleum auriforme), having a fibrous skeletal structure, is now referred to the Family Seliscothonidae under the new name Pachyselis auriformis.
